A family builder in Glenbrook
Backline Construction is run out of Glenbrook, on the southern edge of the Manukau. Family-run since 2015, with two decades on the tools behind it.
We build new homes, we add to old ones, and we pull apart the ones that have stopped working for the people living in them. Most of our work is within half an hour of the yard, across Franklin and South Auckland, and over the Bombays into the North Waikato towns.
The reason people ring us back is usually the same reason they rang in the first place: they wanted to deal with the builder. Not a sales consultant, not a project coordinator who inherits the file after the contract is signed. The person who walks your site on day one is the person who hands you the keys.
Building is a trade with a poor reputation, and mostly it has earned it. Prices that move. Programmes that slip without a phone call. Snag lists that never close. Every one of those is a communication failure before it is a building failure.
So the way we work is built around removing those specific problems. A fixed price, arrived at properly. A programme you can see. A weekly update whether or not there is good news in it. And a snag list closed before handover rather than after.
None of that is remarkable. It is just uncommon enough to be worth saying out loud.
01How we work
We price it before we promise it
On a renovation that means paid investigation work before a fixed price, not a confident number pulled out of the air on the first visit. It makes our quoting slower than most. It also means the number holds.
We take fewer jobs than we could
A short list at any one time is the only way one builder stays across every site properly. It is a deliberate limit on how fast this business grows.
We tell you the awkward thing early
Rot behind the cladding, unconsented work in the roof space, a design that will cost twice what you were hoping. You get told when we find it, not when it becomes unavoidable.
We say no when it is not our job
If the work is too small for how we are set up, or better suited to a specialist, we will say so and point you somewhere useful rather than take it on badly.
